Fall Festival Next Week. Ready to Pull Some Pork??

9/26/2014

Comments

KIUMC's annual Fall Festival is right around the corner, October 4! As usual, we'll be selling delicious pulled pork sandwiches to support our mission trips! None of this is possible without master roaster John Beever, who will be cooking the 160 lb pig overnight Friday into Saturday. We will have some really fresh pork!

To make all of this happen, we need your help! Sign up to help at one of the following times:
Friday after school - set up the booth
Saturday morning at 8:30 am to pull pork
Morning shift (10:00 am - 1:00 pm) selling sandwiches
Afternoon shift (12:00 pm - 3:00 pm) selling sandwiches

This only happens if you students step up and help out! Don't assume someone else will - we need you!

Instascavenger Hunt - what a crazy night!

9/19/2014

It was an epic battle, down to the finish! Here's the idea: it's a scavenger hunt, but everything is documented online. For example, one item was a team member had to bag a stranger's groceries. Take a picture, post it on Instagram, collect points! The team with the most points in a certain time period wins!

Needless to say, many crazy memories were made. If you want to see the aftermath, go to Instagram and check out #rootsteamhashtag and #rootsteambres. The girls won... but only just barely. It all came down to the big-ticket item: jumping over Pastor David! The girls beat the guys to it by less than a minute!

The middle schoolers have the same event coming up on October 10, so mark your calendars! This game is so much more fun with five or more teams - so invite your friends! There will be a pretty great prize for the winning team...

New Series: Alive

Words are powerful. They can make your day or ruin it Words can make friends or create enemies. On a global level, words can start a revolution or bring peace. Now, think about how much more powerful God’s words are.  Simply by speaking He caused the world to be created along with everything in it— mountains, oceans, thunderstorms, planets, the sun. His words caused nations to rise and fall, and people who were dead to come back to life. God’s words are the most powerful force in our entire world, but if we’re honest…most of us don’t think of them that way. We hear “God’s Word” or “the Bible” and think about an old dusty book, something complicated, outdated, or even boring. But what if it was never meant to be that way? What if we’re missing out by seeing it as simply a history book or something to study? As we take a closer look at God’s Word, we may be surprised at what we find. God is inviting us to hold, read, and experience the same Word that created everything we see. It’s more than a book. It’s better than a story. It’s alive.

Week 1: Out Of The Fish Bowl  – Give God’s Word a chance to change you.  What words come to mind when you think about the Bible? Exciting? Mind-blowing? Life-changing? If you’re honest, probably not. Even though we aren’t quick to admit it in church, many of us don’t feel all that excited about reading the Bible. Maybe for you it just seems like a history book filled with random facts about random people that don’t really matter. Or maybe it feels more like a foreign language textbook with lots of words and phrases that don’t make sense. Either way, it’s hard to see how an old book written by a bunch of dead guys about an invisible God could be relevant to anything we’re doing today.  But that was not how it was intended to be experienced. Through a letter written to the Hebrews, we discover that the Bible is more than just a recording of the past. If we give it a chance, God’s Word has the power to change our present and shape our future.

Join the conversation this Sunday morning at 11:00 am!

Announcing Roots Student Leadership!

9/16/2014

We are really excited to be starting a student leadership team. The team will have various responsibilities, including picking events, choosing our message series, recruiting their peers, and helping behind the scenes. The details are still to be determined, as we're figuring this out as we go.

To form the team, we are currently accepting peer nominations. Parents, please do not participate in this; it is for students to nominate their peers! Students, nominate someone you look up to for their wisdom, their spiritual maturity, or who already exemplifies leadership qualities.

Once the nomination period is over, we will contact those who have been nominated to see if they are interested. Being a part of the student leadership team will be a commitment, with expectations. We're excited to start this new chapter!

Roots Sunday Night was Awesome.

9/9/2014

What a great night! Thanks to all of the student who came out to make it such a memorable evening. I think we avoided all concussions and vomitting... so the night was a success! Jousting, volleyball, football, and corn hole was a ton of fun! Our game however...

We played "What Would You Do For...?", which offered prizes to students... if they were willing to work for it. For example, a student could say they were willing to eat a jar of baby food for an iTunes gift card. If only it stayed that tame. Things escalated until one student ate a jar of cat food (safe for human consumption, I promise!), while another faced the "Blender of Doom," filled with an entire Happy Meal, onions, beets, pickle juice, SPAM, and who knows what else.

We wrapped up our evening with a message about how much our great God loves us, even though we are so undeserving. Small group discussions ensued, where we talked about our thoughts and reactions to what we had heard.

I am so glad that we had 47 students come out on Sunday Night. And I'm kind of glad we didn't have 50. The middle school Sunday school class made a bet with me: if they got 50 students to come to Roots Sunday Night, they could pie me in the face at the end! However, my face and my clothes were spared. I have a feeling I may not be as lucky next month... Mark your calendars for October 5!

As we get back into the swing of things, I am so excited for our new Bible study on Wednesday nights. It's all a part of a happening evening at KIUMC every week! Connections starts with a hot, home-cooked family meal at 6:00 pm in the Fellowship Hall. The cost for dinner is $4/person or $10/family. At 7:00 pm, there are activities, classes, and Bible studies for all ages throughout the building, including Celebrate Recovery, Financial Peace University, and Kids' Club, for ages 4 through 5th grade.

Our Bible study is for both middle and high school students, grades 6-12. We'll be starting a study on the book of Romans, which is packed with amazing truths and head-scratching theology. We're using a book called Romans (Studies on the Go) by Laurie Polich. The first eight students to RSVP below will get the book for free!
